Published in 1994 but he University Press of Kentucky and currently out of print, this is Carol Wilson's book entitled Freedom at Risk The Kidnapping of Free Blacks in America 1780 - 1865. It is a hardcover volume with is original dust jacket and is in excellent, clean condition with only minor wear. There is price sticker residue on the back cover. It is currently out of print, so a bit harder to find. Using newspaper accounts, memoirs, slave narratives, court records, letters, abolition society minutes and government documents, Wilson has pieced together a remarkable picture of what life was like for free blacks in America during those years and the constant fear of the kidnapping that they lived with, knowing they had little recourse, even if they had been free for generations. Wilson also details how the black community was often forced to organize to protect its own during these time.
