1867 Civil War Book - The Blue Coats and How They Lived, Fought and Died for the Union by Captain John Truesdale
This is a wonderful old book - published in 1867 by Jones Brothers & Co and a first edition, this is Captain John Truesdale's work entitled The Blue Coats and How They Lived, Fought and Died for the Union: With Scenes and Incidents in the Great Rebellion. It comprises narratives of personal adventures, thrilling incidents, daring exploits, heroic deeds, wonderful escapes, life in the camp, field and hospital, adventures of spies and scouts, together with the songs, ballads, anecdotes and humorous incidents of the war.
It is a hardcover volume with 510 pages, cloth over boards, and a gold gilt design on the cover and spine - on the cover it reads Dedicated to the Boys in Blue, and this is also embossed on the back cover, but without the gilt. There is rubbing on the cover and on the top and bottom of the spine. The binding is strong and the pages are tight. There are two black and white frontis engravings of Grant and Sherman (these two pages have water stains), and over 100 illustrations, including fold out pages with portraits of Union & Confederate officers, including Meade, Hancock, Butler, Custer, Sheridan, Lee, Jackson, Longstreet, Mosby and more, and battle scenes, such as the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capture of Lookout Mountain, the prisoner's camp at Andersonville, and more.
There is foxing on the pages, and some of the fold out illustration pages have print from the preceding page on their backs, but not on the illustrated side, and some small tears on their folds. There is also some water staining to the bottom right corner of the pages, but it appears to have mainly affected only the edges of the pages, with more showing in the beginning of the book, then the pages appear cleaner throughout. There is a name written on the inside front in pencil, but no other writing. Overall, though, considering the age, since this was published in 1867, the condition is better than expected and the book itself is an amazing microcosm of Civil War people, events and times. This would be a great addition to your library or collection.
