This lovely carved crystal ring by Lalique ring features the face of the nymph Arethusa, patron saint of ancient Syracuse.
As one version of the Greek myth tells it, the river god Alpheus came upon the figure of Arethusa bathing in a clear stream in Arcadia and instantly fell in love with her. Learning of Alpheus's love, Arethusa fled and a long chase ensued. She prayed to the goddess Artemis who hid her in a cloud, but she began sweating from fear and transformed into a stream which surfaced at Syracuse.
The nymph's face is captured in a shimmering piece of Lalique crystal, with sea life around her face. The square crystal is encased in a sterling silver frame and set in a wide open band that resembles waves.
Ring is 7&1/4 and due to the band's design, cannot be resized. Weight: 11.7 grams.
Excellent condition, no damage, just very light wear.
Band is stamped "Lalique," with "925" for silver and what appears to be French maker mark.
