This lovely hinged oval locket was beautifully constructed in memory of a loved one.
The top and back lids have been painted in thick black enamel with a beautiful pansy centered on the front. The flower petals are blue and white enamel and outlined in gold, and a small seed pearl (signifying a teardrop) is housed in the centre of the blossom. In the Victorian language of flowers, the pansy signified loving thoughts; kind memories of loved ones. Inside you'll find a piece of plaited hair (easily removed), and an empty right lid (photo was likely removed).
The locket opens from the side and snaps shut (and stays shut). Measures 1&5/8" long from the top of the bail by 7/8" across. Weight is 11.6 grams.
Very good condition. I don't see any problems with the locket. The bail has a wee "flea bite" on the side. Teeniest enamel loss on right blue petal near the bottom, only visible under magnification. Slight indentation mark on the black enamel--again, barely noticeable.
I couldn't find a mark but gold tests as 9K. A beautiful piece, at least 100 years old.
