Vintage late 1940s into early 1950s roman striped taffeta tilt hat in a sailor silhouette features a front bow accent and black net veil. The stripes, in an assortment of widths, are a vibrant multi-colored combination of navy, black, red, green, yellow and white.
Finished with a rolled brim and lined in stiff net, the hat has a back elastic strap to secure it as it perches saucily on the head.
It reflects the vogue for roman striped taffeta as a fashion fabric—particularly for spring-- throughout the 1940s and into the early 1950s. Photo #9 shows a March 1949 ad for roman striped taffeta hats in varied styles.
Likely a home-made rather than professionally done hat, its simple but neat construction reveals its amateur manufacture in spots (photo #6). Nonetheless, this striking hat is in crisp, clean, excellent condition—perfect for the season ahead and many after that.
Measurements are: 21” inner circumference, 10.5” diameter taken across the bottom, 1.75” brim width, and 2.5” crown height.
