Vintage 1960s matching purse and pillbox hat set in soft, nubby white linen accented by “floral sprays" of seashells is unused deadstock with the original tags still present.
The white, mauve, and purple shells are artfully arranged arround a central “flower” consisting of a faux pearl-topped sea urchin surrounded by purple shell “petals”. On the hat, this seashell accent is at the front; on the handbag, it is on the reverse of the side that opens with a flap and brass twist-lock closure.
Both pieces are linen-lined and gently shaped (as one of the tags explains) by a “modern high quality plastic…supporting material”.
The handbag has one open sidewall pocket inside and measures 7 ¼” x 10” x 3”, with a 12” handle. The hat is 3” tall and 7” in diameter. Both hat and handbag are labelled “Bob and Irma Morris”; in addition, paper price tags are present which read: “Pure Linen; also lined with pure imported linen. It’s Washable; It won’t sag or wrinkle or shrink”, and encourage regular washing.
A one year “guarantee” tag is also present, which describes the plastic supporting material which structures the pieces without making them rigid, and which is “unaffected by soap or water” (the tag goes on to provide washing instructions).
Bob and Irma Morris' handbag company was in business from the early 1950s through the late 1980s. Photo #14 shows Irma Morris at work in her Florida factory in 1967. The photo caption reads: "Mrs.Irma Morris operates M.R.Morris Handbags Inc at the airport industrial complex, with her husband. In business since 1953, they manufacture fabric and plastic handbags for exclusive shops, not only in Florida, but throughout the United States.”
Very good, unused condition, with slight darkening to the underside of the purse handle (photo #13), and three “shadows" of glue discoloration around the seashell accents, two on the purse and one on the hat (photos #12 and #5).
