Edwardian 1900s Sterling Silver “Magic” Telescoping Pencil Charm - image 1 of 11

Antique early 1900s sterling silver telescoping pencil charm with attachment ring for chatelaine or guard chain is deeply chased in a design of scrolling feathers.

Gently twisting the top of the pencil from its crown “magically” increases its length from 2.75” to 4” (ring adds another ¼” to both measurements). The finely grooved, telescoping upper portion of the barrel has a smooth, engraveable rectangle.

At the pencil’s other end, twisting the pointed tip exposes a tube to hold a stick of lead.

Photos #2 and #10 show similar “magic” pencils in the 1902 W.H.Lassell catalog and the 1903 New York Jeweler catalog, respectively.

Stamped “STERLING” on the smooth cap at the base of the barrel, this pencil is in near-excellent condition, with no issues other than 2 tiny dents to the crown, visible through a loupe (photo #9).
