This item from Cur.io Vintage is now in the Shop Backroom.
Vintage early to mid-1940s evening calot or skull cap features a black cord base covered in intricately applied gold metallic braid. The concentric pattern of the braid is repeated in four triangles with rounded bottoms, creating an overall clover shape. The calot is unlined, with the scalloped underside edged in black grosgrain ribbon.
Though evening skull caps were present in the 1930s, in the 1940s the calot became a popular daytime silhouette as well, especially for younger women (who referred to the hats as “beanies”). Evening calots in the 1940s were often spangled and veiled, and sometimes secured with jewelled clips or brooches.
Photo #6 shows a selection of calot styles from 1944 (left) and 1946 (middle and right). The left and middle photos show “clover calots”, the shape being offered here; the top right hand example is, like this one, of patterned cord.
Measuring 7” in diameter and 5 ½” from the top center to the middle of each “triangle”, the hat is meant to cup the top of the skull and will accommodate a range of head sizes.
