New old stock with its original hangtags, this vintage 1950s turquoise rayon shirtwaist dress with white accents and “Crushmaster” finish has the bright, sporty vibe of a two-tone Chevy Belair or mid-century bowling shirt.
The short-sleeved dress has notched lapels and closes down the front with 9 dome-shaped white plastic buttons topped by a faux metal “x".
Small pockets with triangular flaps at the chest and hip add visual interest plus another flash of white color, studded as they are by white buttons on top and with white flaps layered underneath and peeking out.
The dress fabric is jacquarded with alternating satin and textured vertical “stripes”. Vertical waist darts and tucks over the shoulder seams ease the bodice fit, as does the subtle center box pleat starting several inches above the waist in back. There are self-fabric belt loops, though the original belt is missing.
No manufacturer’s label, though there is a vintage size tag (18 ½), and the original paper hang tags are present. One restates the size, along with the style number; one has detailed drip-dry care instructions and indicates that the dress is made with “Crushmaster” wrinkle-resistant rayon fabric from the Associated Dye and Print Co. of NJ; and one has the price tag from a John Green Brokerage store.
John Green stores were part of a large Midwestern retail chain that grew out of a cluster of discount department stores (“Illinois Brokerage”) opened in the late 20s by Nathan Greenberg. Shortly after Nathan’s death, his son John founded the Greenberg Mercantile Corporation, which included “Brokerage” stores that, as his father had done, bought liquidated and over-stock from large retailers and offered them at significant savings.
Measurements are: Bust 40”, shoulders 15”, waist 33”, hips 40” length shoulder to waist 15”, length waist to hem 27”.
Very good, unused condition, with a dot on the back of the left sleeve (photo #8) and a 1.5” yellowish streak near the left seam in front, about 12” from the bottom (photo #9).
Please note: Original belt is missing; belt shown in the photos is for display only. I show the dress unbelted in photos #10 - #12).
