Vintage mid-1950s jacquarded navy tie from Penney’s Towncraft label alternates horizontal bands of crepe with satin ribbon stripes, further enriching the texture with vertical, tonally ribbed lozenges and stylized fleur-de-lys embroidered designs in silver-white and ice-blue.
Unlined, the tie is labelled “Penney’s Towncraft, Made and Styled in California”. No fabric tag, but it is likely the rayon-acetate blend widely used in the mid- to late 1950s.
J.C.Penney acquired the “Towncraft” trademark from collar & shirtmaker Hall, Hartwell & Co. in the mid-1930s, and over the next five decades expanded it to include everything from sleepwear to outerwear. Photo #6 shows a 1955 ad for Towncraft ties for skinny and transitional width ties with designs quite similar to this one.
Measuring 54.5” long by 2.75” across the front blade, this handsome tie is in excellent condition.
