Vintage 1950s glossy straw-like braid hat in a bold black and white color scheme features a sculptured brim and head-cupping shape that frames the face prettily. A self-fabric accent on the left front side swirls dramatically upward and seems to thread through the spiral pearl “buckle”.
Vintage and antique millinery expert Barbara Troeller of Rue de la Paix tells me that synthetic braid was a popular millinery material, typically imported, in the 1950s and early 1960s. The glossy variety used here strikes a wonderful balance between crisp appearance and light weight with some “give” to it.
Measuring 21.5” around the inner grosgrain ribbon, the hat has a diameter of 9”, front brim width of 2.5”, and crown depth of 3.5”. It is unlined, unlabelled, and in excellent condition.
