Vintage 1920s mauve straw hat trimmed in matching faille hatband features a cream silk underbrim “embroidered” in braided mauve silk ribbon to match the whimsical, spoke-like crown treatment. The hat strikes a perfect balance between its simple, almost sporty silhouette, and lovely (and clever!) details.
The novelty crown shape—a modified telescope crown, with the center blocked into raised, crossed “bars”, serves as the hub of the four sets of 5 ribbon pairs encircling it. The wide faille hatband is prettily knotted at the sides, extending into a rosette-like affair on one side, and curving under the brim on the other.
Please see photo #8 for some examples of hats with similar silhouettes and/or embroidered accents, from the 1925 “National” and 1926 Montgomery Ward catalogs.
Measurements are 22” inner circumference, 2” brim width and 5” crown height.
This enchanting hat is in very good condition, sturdy and clean, with the embroidery on the underbrim and crown intact. Issues are that the crown liner is missing and the cream silk of the underbrim is thinning in spots throughout.
