Vintage 1930s Emerald Green Velvet Evening/Opera Coat
In a case of 1930s-does-1890s, this vintage late 30s velvet evening or opera coat in a deep emerald green features a high neck and dramatic gigot, or leg o' mutton sleeves.
The full-length coat has a double button closure, at the throat and--slightly offset as was fashionable at the time--at the waist. Puffed at the shoulder, the sleeves are generously cut through the elbow, from where they taper to the wrist.
Lined in heavy cream charmeuse satin, the coat has inner velvet ties at the waist that thread through a cord loop for snugger fit. There is an interlining for warmth.
No manufacturer's label, but the National Recovery Board label (which came into use in the mid-30s) is present.
Measurements as follows: Bust 34", shoulders 15", waist to 34", hips 37", sleeves 24", and length (shoulder seam to front hem) 53.5".
Excellent condition. The coat, acquired from the 90 year old original owner (the self-appointed steward of generations of her family's clothing) was missing its buttons, which likely would have been self-fabric covered domes. I have replaced them with chunky dark green celluloid buttons with striking Deco-era designs.
