With its foulard-like pattern of embroidered gold lions, this vintage early 1980s wine silk repp tie from the Horchow Collection riffs on the club or “symbol” tie so popular in the late 70s through mid 80s.
The use of a regal, deep red and gold colorway and pattern of heraldry-evoking statant lions provides an elegant—or, perhaps, whimsical—departure from the corporate logos and preppy sports motifs typical at the time.
Measuring 57.5” long by 3” across the front blade, the tie is labelled “Horchow” and has an “All Silk” fabric tag.
A mail order catalog for luxury goods launched in 1973 by Ohio native Roger Horchow, the Horchow Collection had become so wildly successful by the late 1970s that Horchow not only wrote a book about the experience but spun off two additional catalogs: “Trifles”, offering trendy, less expensive wares; and “Grand Finale”, a sale catalog which steeply discounted unsold merchandise from the other two catalogs. In 1988, Roger Horchow sold his business to Neiman Marcus—where, ironically, he had quit as vice president of the mail order department in 1970, after realizing there was no opportunity for job growth.
This unique and handsome tie is in excellent condition.
