The exceptional navy and magenta brocade of this mid- to late 1960s suit elevates its classic pairing of short-sleeved dress and double-breasted jacket to distinctive new heights.

From the estate of pair of local seamstresses active from the 1930s through the 1960s, it reflects their penchant for quality fabrics (in this case an rayon-acetate brocade with an intricate abstract pattern of crescents, swirls and stylized paisleys), as well as their signature attention to detail.

Princess-seamed in back, where it closes with a nylon zip, the dress has a novelty front panel that both nods to military style and matches the jacket’s navy satin piping and self-fabric buttons. It is piped around the jewel neckline as well, and three small thread loops--one at the center front waistline and two at the sides--offer the option of belting it with a thin ribbon or sash. (No belt came with the suit; the unmatched belt I show it with in photos #6 & #7 is for display purposes only and will not be included).

The jacket has notched, sharply peaked lapels and three pairs of navy plastic and brocade buttons down the front. Entirely outlined by the satin contrast piping--which also accents the (non-functional) single-button cuffs and faux hip pocket flaps—the jacket is shaped by curved princess seams front and back.

Both pieces are fully lined in fuchsia rayon satin, and the front panel on the dress has a white muslin backing to reinforce its shape. All button holes are fully bound.

No labels of any kind. Based on burn tests and research, I believe the fabric to be a rayon-acetate brocade; extremely popular throughout the 1960s, brocades in this blend often featured metallic or iridescent effects and were offered both as piece goods and in finished garments.

Measurements are as follows: Dress bust 36”, shoulders 14.5”, waist 30”, hips 35”, and length shoulder to hem 40”. Jacket bust 36”, shoulders 14.5”, sleeves 21.5” waist 32” and length shoulder to hem 21”.

This striking dress suit is in excellent, little or never used condition, with no flaws to note.
