Vintage 1950s skirt suit in a light brown rayon shantung features a richly slubbed texture and smart detailing.
The fitted jacket has a nipped waist, set-in long sleeves, and angled chest and hip welt pockets. It closes to the collar with 7 caramel brown plastic buttons, and is lined in hand-set, pale gold rayon faille. The bottom front of the jacket is smoothed and structured by 7” stiffening panels in the interlining, likely of pellon or buckram.
The skirt has a back kickpleat and side metal zipper closure. Two pairs of artfully placed, slanting tucks at the waist yoke both shape it and add visual interest. The skirt is unlined, with pinked seams and a hand-done hem.
No labels of any kind; from the estate of a seamstress, the suit was presumably her work.
Measurements are as follows:
Jacket bust 38”, shoulders 16”, sleeve length (from shoulder seam) 25”, waist 30”, length (from center back) 26”.
Skirt waist 27.5”, hips 38”, and length 30”.
This beautifully made suit is in excellent condition, rarely if ever used.
