Beautifully made vintage mid-century Mexican sterling silver brooch and clip earring demi in a pinwheel, star, or flower shape features inlaid “blades” (or “rays" or “petals”) of abalone shell, alternating with black enamel. The brooch has a bail as well as a pinstem, so that it can be worn as a pendant if so desired.
All three pieces are stamped “Hecho en Mexico 925” in a circle around the silversmith’s initials, “AR”. Earring clipbacks are marked “STERLING”, with the 1949 design patent number for them (156452) underneath. On one of the earrings, the little plate joining the clip mechanism to the earring front is marked “ALPACA".
Measurements are a bit over 2” in diameter for the brooch, and 1” in diameter for the matching earrings. Digital weight is 14 grams for the brooch and 8 grams for the earrings. Other than a slight bend to the pinstem, which closes securely with a safety catch, the set is in excellent condition with light patina.
