Vintage 1960s creation by Gwenn Pennington crosses a finely woven Optimo-crowned Panama straw hat with the cheekily masculine derby shape so popular in the second half of the decade.
Black patent vinyl edges the brim for a futuristic, Space Age touch, while a cream grosgrain hatband makes it clear that this is a woman’s hat by tying the ribbon into a bow in back, and sending the ends trailing prettily down.
Unlined, the hat is labelled “Gwenn Pennington Exclusive” and tagged a size 22. Active from c. 1950 well into the 1970s, milliner Gwenn Pennington was typically advertised alongside names such as Lilly Dache and Mr. John; in the later 60s and 70s, she became known principally for her wigs.
Meauring 22” around the inner headsize ribbon, the hat has a 2” brim, 4.5” crown depth, and 11” front to back diameter.
