Vintage mid- to late 1960s cream mock neck wool shell from Valentina Ltd. has been lavished with beads and sequins in a pattern of large sunflowers, six on front and four in the back.
Defined by iridescent clear and bronze sequins, the petals of the sunflowers sit around thick “rings” of bronze seed beads, which also form the stems and foliage (and rim the top of the neckline). At the center of each flower is a cluster of rosy bronze pearls which give a pop of dimensionality against the dazzling sequined “ground”.
The shell closes in back with a full length metal zipper, and is lined in cream rayon satin. Two 2” side slits at the hip ease the silhouette over whatever the shell is to be paired with, from palazzo pants to a formal or pencil skirt.
Labelled “Valentina Ltd, Rome Paris Hong Kong”, the tunic also has a fabric tag which reads “100% Wool, Made in Hong Kong”. Tag size is a vintage small.
Valentina Ltd. (the “other Valentina”, as the Vintage Fashion Guild Label Resource puts it) was a Hong Kong-based company that produced high quality, hand-embellished knitwear from the late 1950s through the early 1970s. A Valentina Ltd. beaded cocktail dress retailed for $120 in 1968, which adjusted for inflation equates to roughly $818 today.
Exact measurements are: Bust 34”, waist 32”, width across the bottom 34”, and length shoulder to hem 21”.
Very good condition, with one “spoke” of seed beads missing from the left center front flower (photo #8).
