Vintage 1960s needlepoint purse featuring butterflies and leaves on a khaki ground has an ornately embossed goldtone frame and chain-link handle.
Both sides of the purse are crossed diagonally by a leafy branch in brown and olive. A blue, white, yellow and black butterfly hovers in the upper left corner on one side; it occupies the same position on the other, joined by a larger orange, yellow, and black butterfly in the bottom right (meant to represent a glorious Monarch butterfly?).
More leafy sprigs line the sides and bottom of the purse, which are piped in pastel mint grosgrain to match the lining. Purse interior has open sidewall pockets on both sides; on one, the pocket holds a purse mirror, and on the other it is subdivided into two compartments, one with a clear plastic comb and one with a matching coin purse. A pretty matching ric-rac trims the edges of the lining where it joins the frame.
The closure to the purse is a slide-lock clasp, and there are brass feet on the purse bottom to help keep it clean.
With no labels of any kind, the body of the purse was likely made from one of the needlepoint purse kits that became all the rage--especially with younger women--in the early 1960s.
Such kits included background material with a stamped design (and, sometimes, a pre-embroidered petit point “scene”) plus yarn. After completing the needlework design, a woman would bring it back to the store to be professionally mounted and lined. Since the cost of the kit plus mounting could be as high as $50 (adjusted for inflation, this is the equivalent of over $400 today), handier women created their own designs with their own choice of yarns, and even did the mounting themselves, with simple frames and amber plastic handles.
Purse measures 8” tall by 11” across, with a depth of 3” at the base. Weighing 1 lb 11 ounces, this lovely example of mid-century DIY is sturdy as well as in excellent, clean condition, with no issue other than minor finish wear to the chain handle.
