Vintage mid-1940s “Van Gogh Prints” silk wide tie sold at Jordan Marsh features an abstract leaf print in black, grey, and pale copper on a jacquarded wine ground.
The geometric feel to the print—stylized ivy leaves with a square confetti of dew-like drops on them—contrasts handsomely with the jacquard’s swirling pattern of spiral paisleys.
Label reads “Van Gogh Prints” (with a wonderful vase of sunflowers for a logo), and there is a second store label, “Jordan Marsh Company”, for the Boston-based department store chain.
“Van Gogh Prints” were design-patented and made by Merritt Cravats; a 1946 ad for them boasts: “Artists' colors and imaginative designing in these luxurious all-silk, fine quality ties for long-term enjoyment” and prices them at $5.00 (roughly the equivalent of $61 today).
Stern-Merritt, the parent company of Merritt Cravats, began early in the 20th century and in 1950 became the manufacturer of Christian Dior’s neckwear; it was one of his first two licenses.
Measuring 49” long by 3.75” across the front blade, the tie is tipped in white satin and is in excellent condition.
