Vintage 1940s Smoothie Royal rayon satin necktie features a striking abstract geometric print in orange, yellow, cream and grey on a red ground. A swirling jacquarded pattern to the fabric heightens the energy of the print even more.
Labelled “Smoothie Royal, Reg. U.S. Pat. Off”, the tie was made by the Baltimore-based Schreter Neckwear corporation, founded in 1894 by a Hungarian immigrant whose son, Abraham Harvey Schreter, expanded the company greatly in the 20th century. Schreter Neckwear manufactured ties for everyone from leading department stores to Coca Cola and the New York Stock Exchange. Smoothie ties came on the scene in the late 1930s, boasting of their superior wrinkle resistance, as this little jingle attests:
For the kind of a fellow who’s smart and neat
A ‘Smoothie’ necktie can’t be beat
You can buy a ‘Smoothie’ necktie and wear it every day
Take it off and hang it up and the wrinkles go away.
Untipped, the tie has machine-stitched edges and a wool interlining. It meaures 48” long and 3.5” across the front blade.
Very good condition, with two ¼” dark marks on the back of the large blade (photo #6).
