Circa 1880s to 1890s Late Victorian sash or millinery buckle in gilt metal features a stepped répoussé construction and is done in a Classical Revival style. It features four coin-like profiles of a woman's head (with a prong-set clear paste beside it), amidst ornate scrolls of foliage.
Though the piece is substantial in size—3 ¼" across by 2 ¼" high—it is a quite lightweight 16.6 grams, due to the delicate die-stamped pieces it is assembled from. (The stampings are so deep that they appear in detailed "mirror image" on the back of the buckle).
Excellent condition, with a touch of darkening to the metal on the back.
