Chic vintage 1960s Lilly Daché hat in fine black Milan straw combines the tidy, compact silhouette of a pillbox with the upturned brim and round crown of a Breton.
In this case, of course, the brim curls right back into itself, forming a kind of rouleau around the shallow crown. Meanwhile, a pert faille bow centered under the front brim seems to anchor the hat’s sculpted-from-air style.
The concentric pattern to the woven straw is expertly varied on top of the crown with a diamond motif, adding visual interest to the hat as well as underscoring how beautifully made it is, despite its apparently simple lines.
The hat has both its designer’s (“Lilly Daché, Paris New York”), and its retailer’s (“I. Magnin & Co.”) labels. Lined in black satin, it measures 20” circumference around the inner grosgrain ribbon, with a crown depth of 2.25” and a diameter of 9”.
