Vintage mid-1960s wide brim fine straw hat with upturned Breton brim features a rich, sunwashed shade of red, somewhere between pomegranate and brick.
Woven of fine, supple Buntal straw, the brim has been masterfully worked like fabric around the domed crown, into a swirl of “folds” accented by rows of decorative stitching. The ends of the brim have been folded under twice and “pressed” into place. The ribbon hatband--dyed and stitched to match—is secured in a sweet knot in back.
The cloth label in the hat bears the handwritten words “Anemone Bamako” on it, between 2 four digit style numbers. Presumably placed there by the milliner who created the hat, this type of label likely indicates that it was either made as a one-of-a-kind sample or on request by a high end fashion house, to complement a collection.
Measurements are: Inner circumference (around the headsize ribbon) 21.5”, brim 4.5”, edge-to-edge diameter (taken underneath) 13” and crown depth 4”.
This superbly made hat is in excellent condition.
