Vintage mid-1970s poly knit evening jumpsuit from Alfred Shaheen combines a chiffon-sleeved black “blouse” with wide-legged red pants printed in an exotic, scrolling design.
Glamorous yet easy to wear (and care for), it was likely designed as a hostessing option. The French-darted, v-neck bodice fastens to the waist with six loop and fabric buttons, where an 8” nylon zipper takes over, running to the low hip. The billowing bishop sleeves gather at the cuffs with metal hooks-and-eyes.
Unlined, the jumpsuit is labelled “Alfred Shaheen, California, Hawaii”, and also has a fabric tag indicating the made in the USA, 100% polyester garment should be hand-washed and drip dried.
Pioneering Hawaii-based garment and textile designer Alfred Shaheen continued to produce hand-screened prints even with the shift to synthetic fabrics like acrylic, polyester and nylon in the later 1960s. The print on this one is a variant on the one used for an acrylic jumpsuit in 1970 (photo #8); Shaheen showed an increasing number of “after 5” jumpsuits and pants outfits as the decade progressed.
Measurements as follows: Bust 34”, shoulders 16”, sleeves 25”, waist 25.5”, hips 35”, length shoulder to waist 14”, length shoulder to hem 54”, and inseam 27”.
Excellent condition, with no flaws to note.
