Perfect as an alternative wedding dress, this vintage early to mid-1960s dress in organza-covered champagne satin features an embroidered bodice and waist accent of double satin roses.
Jewel-necked in front with a flirty V-shaped dip in back, the cap sleeve bodice is tonally machine-embroidered in inverted scallops and stylized rosettes. Satin roleau piping defines the waistline, while the self fabric belt allows for a perfectly adjusted cinch.
The straight, mid-calf length skirt has gentle waist pleats in front and a kick pleat in back to ease the silhouette. Closure is a back nylon zip.
Unworn deadstock, the dress was acquired with its original paper hangtag reading “That Rosenbach Look & Fit, Designed Especially for You”. Somehow the tag got detached, with only the orange thread it hung from still present (photo #5 shows a before/after of the tag). Two tags remain, inside the dress at the base of the zipper: A size 18.5 tag and the ILGWU tag in use between 1963-1974.
Rosenbach appears to have been a special occasion line of dresses, for party-goers and mothers of the bride or groom. Ads from the late 60s show dresses made of acetate or silk-and-acetate satin; by 1969 and into the early 1970s, the jewelled or embroidered gowns, cocktail dresses, and evening coats they offered were consistently of polyester crepe or knit.
Measurements are: Bust 40”, shoulders 16.5”, waist 32”, hips 42”, length shoulder to waist 16.5”, length shoulder to hem 43.5”. Belt measures 39” from end to end, and is stamped “18 ½” on the backing.
(The dress was large for my mannequin; photo #6 shows it unclipped and unbelted).
Excellent, unworn condition with no flaws to note.
