Microbeaded Victorian reticule-style purse dating to the mid-nineteenth century features a three banded design with floral, foliate, and scenic motifs.
The narrow topmost band is a vine-like border of turquoise and pink leaves on a deep red ground; the central band combines a blue forget-me-knot and pink and red rose with leaves and sprays of smaller flowers on a white ground; and the landscape at bottom shows a black-roofed pink, turquoise and white house along with trees and striped green “lawn”, against a deep red sky to match the top band.
The sawtooth edges joining the three bands of the design add to its visual interest—and must have added a bit of challenge to the beader!
Design on both sides is identical, and the purse is lined in ribbed sage green silk. Purse is topped in (badly frayed) sage green silk with black-embroidered Borromean rings, and accented by a faux drawstring in black, yellow, red and white tartan plaid silk ribbon.
Measuring 8” by 5.25”, this purse is in fair condition. In addition to the frayed silk at the top, the purse has areas of bead loss, with holes in the canvas--four on one side and five on the other, ranging in size from 1/8” to ¼”. (Photos #2, 3, 5, and 6 detail the location of these holes). Lining is intact. Despite its issues, purse remains charming for display or as a study/pattern example.
