Vintage early to mid-1960s hat in a simple derby shape takes a mod turn with its dramatic covering of carnation pink and pink-and-brown dyed pheasant feathers.
The bright pink feathers sheathing the hat’s round crown and small, upturned brim lie flat, getting their impact solely from their vivid color. But the dyed pheasant feathers ringing the crown (which shade from pink to plummy brown to black) are positioned to “stand on end”, much like those of a bird ruffling its feathers. This fluffy halo makes the hat appear larger than it is, every bit as eye-catching as the oversized bubble toques so fashionable then.
Lined in peach satin with a taupe grosgrain headsize ribbon, the hat has no maker’s label. Measuring 22.5” inner circumference, it has a diameter of 9” and a crown height of 4.5”.
Very good condition, with an occasional stray feather needing to be tucked back into place.
