Chic little vintage 1948-1950 black straw sailor hat from Robinelle features a pleated ivory cotton hatband with jacquarded diagonal “stripe”. Adding visual interest, the brim of the hat is edged with an overlapping ring of straw, with the hatband fabric applied to its underside for a layered effect.
Unlined, the hat is labelled “Robinelle Original” and tagged a size 22 on the grosgrain head size ribbon.
Dallas-based Robinelle hats were sold widely throughout Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma in the 1940s through the very early 1950s. Averaging $10.98 to $14.98--or $100 to $150 in today’s currency--they were designed to (as one 1946 ad put it) “carr[y] out that soft look of longer skirts and tapered waists”, and were typically shown as accessories to New Look suits and dresses from makers like Swansdown, Jablow, and Paul Parnes. Please see photo #8 for an example of a similar silhouette hat advertised in 1948.
Measuring 10.25” in diameter, with an inner circumference of 22”, a crown height of 2.25” and a brim width of 1.75” in front/1.25” in back, this saucy little topper is in excellent condition.
