Herbert Alexander (British 1874-1946) Cercina Near Florence (1898). Oil on wood panel. Signed and dated 1889. Exhibited: The Society of Oil Painters (now the Royal Institute of Oil Painters [ROI]* 1889 or 1890. Exhibition label verso.

A little jewel! Antique, yet fresh as when it was painted having been behind glass since, in its original frame, signed and dated, with exhibition label. We love finding paintings like this! The vivid blue sky and bright farmhouse walls convey the heat and Tuscany light wonderfully. The influence of impressionism is also clear, most obviously in the treatment of the goats and the farmer sitting on the wall.

MEASUREMENTS:
SIGHT (Visible Painting):
Height: 7.75ins (19.5cm)
Width: 7ins (17.5cm)
FRAME:
Height: 14.75ins (37.5cm)
Width: 13.75ins (35cm)

CONDITION:
Painting: Superb.
Frame: In excellent condition. The frame is simple with a slightly rustic air and well matched to the subject of the painting. There are some accumulated spots of dirt behind the glass on the inside edge of the frame but nothing that detracts.

*The Society of Oil Painters”, formerly the Institute of Painters in Oil Colours, was only named such from 1898-1903. Thereafter it became the Institute of Oil Painters (1904-1908) and subsequent to that the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), which is its present name.
