BIOGRAPHY: A seventh generation Abaconian, as a child in their home in Green Turtle Bay, Alton Lowe would sit at the family table and watch his father drawing seascapes and sailing boats. Those moments inspired a young artist who would grow up to be one of Abaco’s finest. Alton Lowe would later open the Albert Lowe Museum in memory of his father.

Aged 9, these roots of Lowe’s passion for art grew as he took Art classes with a local American woman. At 14, he was invited to America by a couple who ran an Art gallery in Miami beach, to be taken up after finishing his years at school. He was taught Art for two years in Florida, and with the assistance of his American sponsors, he went on to New York City where he studied classical drawing and painting at the Frank Reilly School of Art; completing his four year course in only three years.

Prior to returning to the Bahamas, Alton Lowe spent time in both England and Canada. Back home in Abaco, an exhibition of his works was held in 1966, after which he held highly successful and popular annual exhibitions, showing for three decades at the Nassau Beach Hotel.

The natural and bounteous beauty of the Bahamas remain the source of Lowe’s inspiration. His paintings gloriously capture, with a vibrancy of colour - cobalts and turquoise, pinks, reds, verdant greens and searing light -, his love for his surroundings. Lowe’s passion for the rich history and natural paradise of the Bahamas is also demonstrated by his dedication to their protection, preservation, and celebration.

In 1976, The Albert Alton Museum (his tribute to his father) was founded in New Plymouth, alongside his founding of the nearby Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden.

Opened in the late 1990s, The Alton Art Gallery on Green Turtle Cay still showcases his art, and numerous cultural celebrations, lectures, concerts, and performances still take place there today.

Lowe’s works have on several occasions been reproduced as postage stamps: to celebrate, in 1992, the 500-year anniversary of the arrival of Columbus; to mark 200 years since the American Loyalist landing; and a set to celebrate his islands’ “tropical flowering paradise”.

As well as in his native land, Alton Lowe’s paintings can be found across the world, and have been included in the collections of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth the II; Prince Charles and the late Princess of Wales, Diana Spencer.
