Tom Coates RBA RP PP NEAC RWS (British b1941) "The Lizard - PM", oil on canvas, monogram lower right, 90cm x 60xcm (35.5 X 23.5in) sight (visible painting) size. Mounted in a gilt and gray wood frame (112cm x 82cm (44in x 32in) frame size). Gallery labels verso: The Mall Galleries (The Federation of British Artists), The Cedar House Gallery, Surrey (with original price: £3,800)
Painted while the artist was staying with the artist Ken Howard and his wife Dora in Cornwall, this is one of the artist's largest and we believe finest works. We are pleased to provide a rare opportunity to acquire this exhibited painting for substantially less than not only his current gallery prices but also than the price originally paid for it.
EXHIBITED: NEAC (New English Art Club) 2002 (label verso)
PROVENANCE: Purchased by the previous owners from the Cedar House Gallery in 2003
CONDITION: In excellent, unrestored condition. A few tiny scuffs to the frame.
Note: To display this painting to its greatest advantage, it should be displayed on a wall which does not receive light direct from a window. We have noted that light falling directly on the shadowed cliff face is reflected as a light brown colour and cliff features, notably the vertical cleft near its extremity, become indistinct.
