George Hardy (British 1822-1909). A Moments Rest (1853). Oil on wood panel. Signed and dated lower right.
Measurements: 19.5cm x 29.5cm (7.75in x 11.5in).
Frame: Gilt wood and composition (41cm x 51cm (16in x 20in) maximum frame size).
CONDITION: Generally In good, ready-to-hang condition. There are some light horizontal surface scratches in the varnish layer. There is some fine craquelure towards the far left of the painting. There are no indications of re-touching or over-painting visible under ultraviolet light although this makes some of the vanish layer fluoresce green so it is hard to be absolutely certain.
BIOGRAPHY: George Hardy was born in 1822 in Windsor, England. He painted mainly genre subjects, particularly cottage interiors and exhibited 41 works at the Royal Academy (RA), 4 at the the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street (SS) and 4 at the British Institution (BI) between 1846 and 1892. He was the brother of Frederick Daniel Hardy (1826-1911) who painted similar subjects. George Hardy died at Cranbrook in Kent in 1909.
