Artist: 19th Century English School.
Title: Portrait of a man standing by an unusual, possibly stag antler, chair, a landscape with a building and church visible in the background.
Medium: Oil on metal panel.
Size: 35 x 43.5cm (13.75 x 17in).
Frame: Substantial 19th century gold coloured composition and wood, with scallop shell mouldings in the corners (60 x 68.5cm 23.5 x 27ins outside frame size).
General: Very good, clean, ready to hang.
Detailed: Very minor scattered retouching visible under ultraviolet light. Minor retouched losses and repairs to frame: There is not an exact match between the mouldings on each side of the frame and also places where repairs have been made (see images). These are not particularly noticeable but concern us primarily because of the potential for further losses in shipping. Often, parts of antique frames and repairs were made with fairly primitive adhesives, such as rabbit skin glue. These tend to dry out over the years and become brittle. If we are to ship the painting internationally, we will pack it extremely well but there is a risk of something coming adrift from the frame which will need to be reattached on arrival.
