Edward J Harding (Irish 1804-1870); A Family Portrait (1839); watercolour; signed and dated 1839; glazed and mounted in a fine antique gilt wood frame with moulded strapwork decoration; 50 x 36.5cm (19.6 x 14.4ins) sight (visible painting) size (71 x 58cm (28 x 22.8ins) outside frame size).
PROVENANCE: Christie's, London 19th May 2000, lot 128 (labels and Christie's stencil number on reverse) – sold for £3,055 (price including buyer's premium)
CONDITION: The finest example we have seen of an early 19th century watercolour portrait. The colours are completely fresh and there is no discolouration, fading or spotting (foxing). There is very slight undulation of the paper (this is almost imperceptible and could be resolved easily by remounting) but that's all. The frame has some minor knocks at the corners but nothing requiring attention; the glass is probably original with slight rippling, air bubbles and a scratch, but this is only visible by holding it up to a slanting glare.
SHIPPING: Because we are selling this painting on behalf of a client, there will be a delay of around 10 days before we will be able to ship it. This is because we have to first take delivery of it from them. Please note: the cost of shipping is included in the price and all our guarantees (see below) still apply.
VIEWING: This painting is available for viewing by appointment in Buckinghamshire, England.
