This 12 inch tall doll, circa the early 20th century, was manufactured by the German firm of Swaine & Company. The doll has a solid dome bisque socket head and a composition bent limb baby body. The baby has an open/closed mouth and blue glass set eyes. The back of the head is incised, “DV//3” along with a circular stamp that reads, “S & Co. Germany.” There is a small u-shaped firing flaw at the back of the neck near the socket. This is not a crack but would have occurred when the doll head was original fired. The body is in excellent condition with no repaint. Little Swaine DI wears a delicate pink silk dress with lace and ribbon trim and a lace bonnet. The dress is so precious and the silk is starting to melt so I made the choice not to try to undress the doll and risk damage to the fabric. The baby also wears old knit underclothing. I love these babies with their sweet faces and beautiful facial painting.
