This 13 inch tall doll, circa the 1920s-30s, has a composition shoulder head, lower arms, and legs. Her body is formed from hard packed straw. She wears her original silk clothing that has some fading but is in very good condition. The lady has side glancing painted eyes with a very detailed painted hairstyle with hand painted brush strokes and molded into a bun with a decorated comb in back. In one of her hands, she holds a pipe and, in the other, she is carrying a silk bag. The detail of expression on this doll is fascinating. I do not want to ponder what she has been smoking in her pipe! I have never seen another like her. The wrinkles and lines on her face are carefully delineated. She is in excellent original condition with no repaint or crazing and only slight wear to the glaze of her face. I believe she would complement a collection of early ethnic dolls particularly a collection including her contemporaries, the Door of Hope dolls.
