This 13 inch tall doll is a precursor to the German character dolls. While definitely a character type face, the doll mold was manufactured by the Kestner Company starting in 1897 while the character dolls did not begin production until circa 1909. The doll has an open bow shaped mouth but no teeth, blue glass sleep eyes, an auburn mohair wig that may be original, but no pate. The back of the head is incised, “B made in 6//Germany//143.” Her ball jointed composition body retains the original finish and has a red stamp, “Germany,” on the top of the right hip. She wears antique lace trimmed cotton underclothing, an old cotton dress, and vintage, but not antique, ecru leatherette shoes and white socks. Her head has no chips but there is an old separation firing line running from the right side of the neck up to the ear. This is definitely the result of the original firing and not later damage. It is quite stable and hidden by the doll’s hair. I have always loved this particular mold as it definitely reminds me of the ensuing early 20th century character dolls. The cabinet size is perfect
