This 10 inch tall doll was created by NIADA artist and charter member Gertrude Florian. She was inducted into NIADA in 1963 and was one of the founders of the organization. The doll is just so wonderful to me. When I saw her, I just couldn't resist. I am not really sure of the materials used to create the doll. It may be a type of composition or papier mache. Whatever the material, it has been used to create the shoulder head, arms, and legs. The body is cloth. The doll has modeled and painted facial features and a blonde human hair wig. Her red high button boots are also created from the composition type material. She wears a red print dress and white cotton eyelet trimmed underclothing. The doll carries her own doll that is also created from the same material with a cloth torso. The doll's dolly appears to represent an early papier mache or china doll. The doll is in very good clean condition with some fading to the red of her dress. There is also an old crack under the chin that probably occurred when the doll was originally created. I cannot see if the doll herself is signed as the clothing is sewn on and I don't want to disrupt the originality by disturbing the clothing. The dress, however, has an attached fabric section with Gertrude Florian's signature. I would almost have guessed that this was an antique folk art doll if I didn't have Florian's signature attached to the dress.
