This 18 inch tall doll, circa the late 18th or early 19th century, has a papier mache type head, hands, and lower legs with a stiff cloth body. She has painted facial features and glass eyes with her original, somewhat sparse in places, blonde wig. The feet have molded and painted sandals. The original dress is black silk with lace and metal trim. It is in delicate condition with much melting of the fabric. The underclothing is cotton. The doll had an old piece of paper with writing in Italian folded and wrapped around her lower body under the skirt. I do not know if this would have been a religious form of a crèche figure but she does have great historical presence. If you like the very old and original, here is a unique and fascinating addition for your collection.
