This 36 inch tall doll was created in velveteen by Norah Wellings circa the 1920-30s, in Wellington, Shopshire, England. She has a great character face with glass eyes, an open/closed painted mouth and a black mohair wig. The doll wears her original grass dress that is just wonderful. She also wears the original bead jewelry. Miss Islander is jointed at the shoulders and hips. She is in excellent clean condition and has her original cloth tag sewn to the sole of her foot. Linda Edward in her book "Cloth Dolls From Ancient to Modern," states "Her [Wellings] black dolls are some of the finest cloth character faces ever made" (95). This statement is certainly demonstrated in this doll. What a great and fun addition to a doll collection. I have never seen this doll in such a large size before and her grandeur just accentuates the skill of her designer.
