German Wax over Papier Mache Doll

This 16 ½ inch tall doll, with a 4 ½ inch tall wax over papier mache shoulder head, was manufactured in Germany circa the third quarter of the 19th century. The head has blue glass set eyes, an open mouth with teeth, and retains her original blonde mohair wig. The original cloth body, jointed at the shoulders and hips, has wax over composition lower arms and legs. The head is in good condition with no repair, except for a small chip on the nose coating, and the body is sturdy and clean. The white antique clothing and lace bonnet appear to be original to the doll. I love these original dolls that have survived for over 100 years. They are not the typical “beautiful” bisque head dolls but, with their unique presence, have great historical significance in the world of doll collecting.
