This 22 inch tall doll has a 5 ½ inch tall china head, circa the 1840s-50s. The hairstyle often is referred to as “Lydia” and is quite early and rare. This doll is definitely of German origin and most likely manufactured by Kestner. There is some typical wear to the black paint of the back of the hair. There is an old stable hairline crack on the back of the shoulder plate. The cloth body, jointed at the shoulders, knees, and hips, has leather lower arms. The body is old but not as old as the china head. The two leather arms are similar but not exactly the same. Lydia wears a fabulous antique cotton print dress and antique cotton underclothing. This is a fabulous china head doll with the elusive “Lydia” hairstyle. It is even rarer than the “Sophia Smith” style. The old hairline allows me to offer her at a more affordable price. She is a beautiful early china doll with a lovely expressive face framed by a rare coiffure.
