These two dolls, circa the early 20th century, wear their original ethnic costumes and reside in their original cardboard box. Found in Sonneberg, Germany, the dolls are fashioned of wood and jointed at the shoulders and hips. The facial features are hand painted. The gentleman’s hat is also created from wood and his clothing is wool felt. The lady’s clothing is cotton. Both dolls have painted black wooden shoes. The dolls are in excellent, clean, and unplayed with condition. The box does show some age discoloration and wear. I believe that the dolls have been stored in the box for many years. The lady does have a crack on her wooden neck as can been seen in the pictures. This probably occurred when she was first manufactured and is quite stable. The stringing at her left shoulder to her arm has also broken. Her jacket does keep her arm in place but I do not think it would be difficult to repair. I chose to leave her as found so as not to disturb the originality. This pair would be a great addition to dolls of wood or those in original ethnic costumes. I love their expressions.
