This 15 inch tall doll, circa the 1890-1910, was most likely printed by the Arnold Printworks of Massachusetts. Celia and Charity Smith of Ithaca, New York, designed and patented this doll. They then had it manufactured by Arnold Printworks. Later, they sold the patent to the company. The doll was sold in printed a sheet that could be cut out, sewn, and stuffed by the purchaser. Arnold Printworks tinted their doll sheets with oil paints that created a soft and artistic look to the dolls. This doll has the same appearance. She is in good clean sturdy condition except for an old small tear on the back of the head and some small repairs and mending. The cotton batting stuffing is showing under the right arm of the doll. There is also some age discoloration especially on the face. This is a more unusual doll than many cut and sew dolls and is discussed photographed on page 135 of Linda Edward’s book, “Cloth Dolls From Ancient to Modern.”
