This 12 inch tall German bisque shoulder head doll, circa 1889, was manufactured in Germany by Simon & Halbig. The light brown body and bisque arms appear to be original to the doll. The head has an open mouth molded upper teeth and blue glass set eyes. The blonde wig is styled in curls and a braid around the crown of the head with some wear at the top of the head. The back of the shoulder plate is incised, “10-1 S&H.” The doll wears a charming antique white cotton dress and a white cotton petticoat. She also wears more contemporary brown boots. The bisque head is in excellent condition with no cracks or repairs. There is some typical small flaking at each ear around the piercing. There is also a small piece of cement on the upper left part of the eyelid. This is not a flake but some of the cement for setting the eye. I was able to gently remove most of it but a small amount remains. It can be seen in the photo. I was afraid to try to remove the rest as I did not want to create a flake. This spot is amplified by the enlarged photos and not really conspicuous in real life. The bisque eyelid is all there but just covered by a small blob of the cement. This sweet and appealing Simon & Halbig doll represents a young lady rather than a dolly face child.
