This 17 inch tall doll with a 5 inch tall papier mache composition head, circa the 1860s-1880s, was manufactured in Germany. The papier mache shoulder head has molded and painted facial features and black hair. The commercially made, most likely original, cloth body is jointed at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. It has leather lower arms and red leather attached button decorated boots. The doll retains her original paper label, attached at the lower back shoulder plate, which labels her as “Superior.” She wears a wonderful antique costume that may be original to her. It includes white cotton lace trimmed underclothing and a great two piece cotton dress with front button closure. The doll has no repaint but some definite wear to the finish to both the face and the hair. The body is sturdy but does have some age discoloration and the leather hands are worn. Personally, I would much rather have a doll like this that shows historic integrity rather than a fluffed up doll. She is a survivor and I hope someone will appreciate her just the way she is. The two piece dress is worth almost the cost of the doll.
