This 17 inch tall doll, circa the 1860s, has a 4 inch tall china head manufactured in Germany by Kestner & Company. The cloth body appears to be commercially made and is probably original to the doll. The head has molded and painted facial features with a modified flat top hairstyle. The face has more of a character expression and is a model I have never seen before. The head is in good condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is some slight roughness to the front edge of the shoulder plate that would have happened in the manufacture of the head and is not later damage. The cloth body is sturdy with some repair and leather replacement on the lower arms. The legs end in red sewn on shoes. There is some repair to the legs a little above the ankles. Of course, I would rather have an original old body with a few repairs rather than a replaced body. Miss Kestner wears antique white cotton underclothing. She also wears an antique red and black striped cotton skirt and a lace trimmed cotton blouse with extensive tucking. This is quite a lovely doll that I have had in my collection for several years as she is just charming.
