This German 14 ½ inch tall doll, circa the third quarter of the 19th century, has a wax over papier mache shoulder head with glass eyes and an interesting molded hat with a green feather plume decoration. She also has a human hair wig that is attached to the base of the hat. The doll’s body is cloth with early wooden lower arms and legs. The legs end in great red painted flat bottom pointed shoes. I believe the body is original to the doll head. The clothing may also be original as the cotton green skirt perfectly complements the hat plume and are of the correct period for the doll. The doll also wears a cotton print blouse and cotton underclothing with beautiful tucking. The head is in good condition with no repaint or repair. There is the typical crazing to the wax surface but, to me, this does not take away from this doll’s charming appeal.
